The Quran is the Holy Scripture of Muslims, consisting of 114 chapters (suras) spread over roughly 600 pages. It was revealed to Muhammed by the angel Jibril at Mecca in Arabia about 610 CE. The Quran is composed of verses (ayat), which are short statements or imperatives traditionally lasting for one or two words each. Some suras also contain longer passages that are marked as especially holy (qur'anic verses of significance). ...The sun and moon follow courses (exactly) computed; The plants and trees — We produce them by different means; Of all fruits on trees, We cause the ripening (of the fruits); There are Signs in this for those who reason. — Qur'an 36:37-40. The physical world has been created with a purpose and it shows itself to be more of a miracle than we can possibly imagine. As such, it is an inspiration to seek the Creator of such beauty and precision. Islam encourages us to discover and investigate the physical world in a rational way in order to better appreciate God's power and wisdom. There is a particular emphasis on all things that are related to our senses, for these things are particularly meaningful in everyday life. Islam places less emphasis on concepts that cannot be understood through one's five senses. Rational analysis of the natural world is considered a virtue in Islam. The Qur'an has numerous references to scientific concepts, such as the expansion of the universe, universal cycles of time, water cycle and biological evolution, among others. The Quran also mentions the existence of fossils. Another important aspect of Islam is its emphasis on community and obedience to Allah, because all things are part of Allah's creation. The Sunni version of the Qur'an has 114 chapters (suras). Each chapter is divided into verses, which are subdivided into ayat, which are further subdivided into tashbihat (verses) and masbihat (refrains). The arrangement of verses in a sura differs across translations, but the contents are always the same. The word "Quran" means recitation or reading. The Arabic word qira'an also means an account, narration or chronicle. The Quran therefore may be described as "an account of an account, narration or chronicle of an account" of Allah's will and plan for humankind. The chapter headings, which were added to the text by Uthman , do not appear in the standard printed versions. The names chosen for the chapters have a theological significance and reflect a new phase in Muhammad's struggle with his opponents. It is believed that many of these Meccan chapters were revealed at a time when Muhammad was refuting arguments from pagan, Jewish and Christian opponents who had questioned the legitimacy of his prophetic status. Thus, chapter titles such as "The Sun", "The Night", "The Resurrection", etc. cfa1e77820
