Theerathu Vilayattu Pillai is a 1937 Indian Tamil-language mythological romance film directed by P.N.Elangovan and produced by Jeeva, starring M.G.Ramachandran as a prince who falls in love with the beautiful courtesan Meenakshi (Sukumari). The film was a box-office hit upon release, and is now considered among the "greats" of Tamil cinema. Once there was a princess named Meenakshi, who lived in Swamimalai with her mother Bhuvanaikaari. Meenakshi's stepmother Rajeswari wanted to prove that she was the greatest woman in the world. When Bhuvaneshwari tried to stop her she went away, leaving her daughter behind with Rajeswari. Meenakshi grew up into a beautiful woman just like her mother. She wore fine clothes and had everything she wanted, except for love. One day, Meenakshi was pampered by the chief minister (N.S. Krishnan) to make her attractive for his son. At a party she meets a blacksmith named Thangavelu, who was a simple man. Her first meeting with him made her unhappy as he insulted her and spoke ill of her stepmother's reputation as a "queen". To take revenge on him she gave him some money so he could never have anything else in life as long as he lived, as she did not want to break his heart or become his enemy. She realises her mistake and runs after him to give the money back, but cannot find him. Then she tries to find out how he is faring, and goes to his home. She meets his mother who praises Rajeswari for her good deeds. Meenakshi realizes that her stepmother is also human and has done some good things in life, although she may have made mistakes. Meenakshi goes back home and realizes how much she needs love in life, which only Thangavelu can provide for her. But even though she loves him, she cannot marry him because he is poor and cannot give her the life of luxury that Rajeswari can provide. She lies to him and tells him that there is another princess in Aravinda (City), who is wealthy and smart; she will be the best wife for Thangavelu. Meenakshi thinks that he may go to Aravinda, but she knows that he will never be able to leave Swamimalai because of his love for her. She decides to ask Rajeswari to marry Thangavelu; this way, she will be able to marry him without losing pride or becoming an enemy of Rajeswari. Rajeswari agrees, but on one condition: after marriage they will visit their village at least once every year. cfa1e77820
